PENSACOLA, Florida - The Florida Department of Law Enforcement unveiled new tools to help in identifying criminals through fingerprints. The Biometric ID system can also collect information from palm prints, scars and tattoos.

It has been operational for almost a year at the FDLE crime lab in Pensacola. During that time the number of matches the system has recorded has tripled.

The crime lab takes cases from law enforcement agencies in several northwest Florida counties, analyzes it, then submits the results. The new fingerprint technology has proved invaluable in identifying potential suspects in unsolved crimes.

The system can match fingerprints from a crime scene to a database of some five million people who have been arrested in the state of Florida. It also has the ability to match prints with the FBI's database.
