The Santa Rosa County Sheriff's Office released images from Sunday night's grenade incident in Jay, Florida. Sgt. Scott Haines says the pictures are of the pickup truck that was present when the grenade exploded. During the investigation, a second grenade was was found. In Sunday's story, Diana Lucio reported three men were seriously injured when a hand grenade exploded. Deputies say they got a call around four o'clock Sunday afternoon that three men had been injured after a car battery exploded in front of a house on Nowling Road. But when authorities arrived they found that the three had been handling a live military hand grenade near a pickup truck, when it exploded in one man's hands.
The Sheriff's Office is working with the ATF and the Fire Marshals office to determine where the men got the grenade from and why they were handling it.
Deputies say they also seized components to make another hand grenade from the home of one of the three men involved. "It is absolutely not legal to possess any component of an explosive device, let alone a live hand grenade, so this is a criminal issue. Unfortunately the victims in this case have serious serious injuries and so that is are first thought is for them", said Haines. The Sheriff's Office says 28-year-old Johnny Pyles is being treated for life threatening injuries. The other two men involved, 37-year-old James Grace and 26-year-old Zachary Taylor are also being treated for severe injuries.
