New York's Times Square has a crystal ball. Mobile will have it's Moon Pie. Now Pensacola is starting a new New Year's Eve tradition with the Pelican Drop.

A team of cabinet makers is busy constructing the center piece of Pensacola's Downtown Countdown 2008. The 1,000 pound Pelican is 13-feet-tall and 17-feet wide and will be covered with 10,000 lights.

Michael Dicks spent hours studying the local brown pelicans. He took hundreds of pictures which he used to come up with the design.

The Pelican will be perched 100-feet in the air and will drop at the stroke of midnight amidst fireworks and confetti.

Maybe Mobile should consider having a pigeon drop…. on Fred’s head. lol

No wonder the southeast has the most overweight and unhealthy group of people in the country. It is because of dumb ideas like the Giant Moon Pie that our children grow up to value Junk food and TV.  Kudos to you Pensacola for bringing culture and art into what is sure to be an amazing event that will prevail for years to come, just like the spare tire and double chin the mobile folks will be getting after they “PIG” out on the moon pie this New Years. Will the cream filling have prozac sprinkled in to curb the bloated blues?

I’d rather see it lighted in the sky than lying on the corner of Broad and Government, squashed flat, burnt a little from the float fire and dated 2005!

MOon Pie MOon Pie MOon Pie

Yeah, Pensacola has an artsy, fartsy Pelican, but Mobile has a stale Moon Pie!  We should all be soooooooo proud…...

It’s like the man on the moon. I had to study it to see it. I hope our MOON PIE is quite identifiable.
