MIAMI (AP) - A Florida couple convicted of aggravated childabuse for feeding their 3-month-old baby a lethal dose of vodka
will spend five years on probation.
That's the ruling a Broward judge made Wednesday in the case
against Mardala Derival and Mackenson Dantus. The pair had already
spent nearly three years in jail.
The couple's daughter, Makeisha, died in 2004 and an autopsy
found she had a high blood alcohol level and liver damage when she
died. Her parents acknowledged they had given her a home remedy
that contained vodka when she had a fever.
Last week a jury acquitted Derival and Dantus of manslaughter in
connection with Makeisha's death. They will also have to complete a
parenting class and perform 25 hours of community service.
