Dogs and cats dropped off at the Escambia County animal shelter have between five and ten days to find a new place top live or they are euthanized.
A new proposal before county commissioners could change that. Staffers would like to turn the animal shelter into a no-kill shelter by 2015.
Right now they see about 16 thousand dogs and cats a year. Some are adopted, others are returned to their owners but the majority, more than 12 thousand, are put down. "We're responsible for the animal shelter so we're responsible for the number of animals being euthanized and we want to reduce that number to zero," says Bureau Chief Sandra Jennings. She along with her colleagues have put together a proposal that would eventually make the shelter self-sufficient along with being a no-kill facility. Commissioners have issues with the plan and will take it up again at their December meeting.

Carl, if the cat doesn’t thank you personally for getting her fixed, let me say THANK YOU. It was worth every penny you spent.

Rosepetal - I knoo, everything the gov. touches turns to XXX, but I feel they have a responsibility (with our tax dollars) to use resources to make our nation a more friendly home for animals. The private shelters/resuce groups struggle for proper funding, but u may be right, it may be only hope for the dogs. Have you heard of D.E.L.T.A. in CA. This man started with nothing but his heart and desire to rescue abandoned dogs, and now it is a huge forever refuge/home for discarded, unwanted animals. If it were not for One person at a time, as u mentioned your wish, none of these wonderful sancuaries would have happened. If enough of us pressure our elected reps.- the will of the people to use our taxes for animals, it could change their perception about so easily killing animals. We have to try. Am happy to find someone else who is concerned enough to act “where others fear to tread.” Educate, witness and act - We have to do it.

well if the state will not private citizens should. the video i posted is only l woman making a hughe difference. i would love to do something like that. i have a house full now. the government can not help these animals except by making tougher laws to protect them. i am looking for a place in maine with acreage. i guarantee you i will have plenty for sure then.

There is only one County Animal Shelter in Baldwin County - in Summerdale. A few cities have their own shelters, and do a pretty good job with the private Animal Rescue Organizations, but it is only a drop in the bucket for the largest county in Alabama, with financially secure cities, like Gulf Shores and Orange Beach and Foley, who pay NOTHING for the “use” of this lone shelter except a small fee for each animal brought there and identified from said city. ? not always possible. Overcrowding, high kill and inadequate staff. We have to make municipalities care enough to pay up and provide true Shelter. Write your legislators - forget abt Congress - they don’t give a XXXX - as per answers I received. Maybe FL will be a good example to B.C., but it won’t be easy - for FL or AL. Every legislator should be made to spend a week in a shelter/pound and look into the eyes of the innocent creatures who are put to death.  Extravagant amenities can’t be fully enjoyed while these innocents die.

hey carl it could be worse, imagine these cats living next door.

jukezz it is heartbreaking and yes they are our best friends. we need tougher laws to protect these animals. animals bring such comfort.

lol carl, i could end up in the dog house. AGAIN

This is truly good news for the animals in this area, however thousands of abandoned, sick and neglected dogs and cats who are killed every day in any given so-called “Shelter” - hardly a shelter for the discarded animals cruel owners throw away like trash. In Baldwin County, people are frightened to think their dog would end up at Summerdale Pound/Animal Control - they haven’t much chance to live over a week at the most. Until government (our tax dollars) start assisting in the expense (due to Vets greed) of altering pets, fund pounds so they will be Shelters, employ an on-site and/or on-call Vet who actually help injured/wounded/abused animals who are taken to pound. If a citizen finds an injured dog in Baldwin County - don’t bother to call Animal Control. They will euthanize the helpless animal, unless you pay for the vet - if you can find one at night or off hours. Our nation routinely looks the other way while “Mans Best Friends” are murdered every hour of the day - at our hands.

I bet this woman’s fence line looks like it’s been rolled all the time with the neighbors putting all those smell good dryer sheets on the fence.grin

Where’s the moderators at? letting you post about cat houses on this site! Watch it girl, you’ll get banned.LOL

this is what i would like, this woman is amazing.
