TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) - Senate president Jeff Atwater, R-NorthPalm Beach, and House speaker Ray Sansom, R-Destin, say lawmakers
will begin a special session on Monday to work on Florida's $2.3
billion budget deficit.
The two Republican leaders issued the formal call for the
special session on Tuesday.
It will run from 11 a.m. Jan. 5 to 11:59 p.m. on Jan. 16.
Legislators are returning to the Capitol to deal with the
shortfall for the remainder of this fiscal year, which ends June
30.
Gov. Charlie Crist's deficit reduction plan is heavy on cutting
spending, borrowing money and shifting funds. It avoids tax and fee
increases as well as employee furloughs and layoffs, but not all
lawmakers support Crist's proposals.
