CHIPLEY, Florida - Authorities say the mother of a missing Florida 7-month-old secretly turned her over to her baby sitter in the middle of the night.

Washington County Sheriff Bobby Haddock said Thursday that
infant Shannon Dedrick was found alive in a 2' x 3' cedar box under baby sitter
Susan Elizabeth Baker's bed. Haddock says she had been in the box for 12 hours. Baker put baking soda inside the box to mask the smell of the baby's feces.

Investigators had been searching for Shannon since her parents reported her missing Saturday.

Haddock says Baker asked mom Chrystina Lynn Mercer on Friday if
she could have custody of Shannon. He says Mercer brought the
infant to Baker's house early Saturday, about 10 hours before she
was reported missing.

Both women are face felony charges, including child neglect, desertion of a child and interference with child custody.

Thursday afternoon, a judge set bond for Baker at $150,000. Shannon's mom got half that.
Neither woman is allowed to have contact with baby Shannon or any other minor children.

Im actually quite serious about the idea. I think its a good one. Im not settled in yet, but once I am, the idea is something I could get behind. I prefer non-partisan, grassroots efforts that start with original ideas. I really believe if everyone got creative and compromised a little we would all be better off. No one side has all the answers. To anything.

Or MAYBE,they would think twice about making unwanted babies,if it wasn’t so easy to get a paycheck? Just a thought.

Yes, but unfortunately, like the issue with drug testing to get a check, it is a violation of the rights of “poor people” since wealthy people would not be required to take these classes.

This is why welfare should be abolished, that way PRIVATE CHARITIES could take over and require these things in order to receive assistance. Unwanted babies would be taken to orphanages where they would actually be raised by someone.

Sheltiedad, your suggestion about the parent classes before a check is an excellent one. Its good enough idea for a grassroots effort to make that happen. Anyone on board?

KX, I was sure off on that one.

dueling banjos?  from the movie Deliverance - didn’t the boy on the porch have similar features?

Ami, good call. You’re absolutely right. The baby does have a head and facial features like the mother. They are very awkward, but very well may NOT be a condition…and actually “just the way they look”!

grin

Some of you have commented on how the baby looks, I mainly noticed the odd shape of her head and small facial features and such. Check out the mom though, odd head, small facial features… maybe they both have some sort of condition? Or maybe…. they just look like that? How odd.

Another ignorant “mother”... not enough brains to function in human society, but more than capable of reproducing.  (anyone else hear dueling banjos?)

Before these babymakers (there have been several over the last few weeks) get the first baby check from the govt. they should have to attend mandatory schooling on baby care and be issued a permit or license to have the child.  If they cannot pass basic human childcare, they should not get the babycheck until they do.

These abused or neglected children will have to function in society for many many years.  Without a nurturing family and skills to function as a civilized human, their chances of success are limited, and the taxpayers will have to support their time in prison and take care of their offspring as the cycle of abuse continues.
