For the first time, Lisa McBroom is seeing what Tuesdays massive fire did to her hometown. "It's almost like a death."
But there is little time to mourn. Already clean-up has begun and signs of rebuilding and of gratitude. The marquis of the Imogene Theater bears the words, "Thank you for saving me."
"It's great to see things like that." Fire Chief John Reble says demolition crews have finished their work for now. "They needed to get that unstable facade down so that highway 90 could be opened. There are a couple of other areas that need to be stabilized then they can really spend some time and determine what they want to do at that point."
Highway 90 maybe back open to traffic but at times it is a slow-go as people do a slow drive-by look at all the damage.
Demolition crews finished tearing down the façade of the professional mall, a store front that carried a historical mural that is now in ruins.
"We enjoyed looking at the mural and you now it had a lot of charm about it and all that's gone," says long time Milton resident Judy Muller.
This too will become part of Milton's history. But everyone understands the road to recovery is a long one and these are just the first steps.
