Escambia County Sheriff David Morgan confirms Fredrick Thornton and several other suspects told investigators that Leonard Gonzalez Jr was the sole shooter.

1:04 p.m.
One of the seven men charged with the murder of Byrd and Melanie Billings told investigators that the alleged mastermind, Leonard Gonzalez Jr, was the sole shooter.

The Billings, a couple known for adopting special needs children, were killed during a home invasion July 9 at their home in Beulah, Florida. Seven people, including Fredrick Thornton and Gonzalez Jr, have been charged with murder. An eighth person, Pamela Long Wiggins, is charged with being an accessory after the fact.

According to court documents obtained by News 5, Thornton said everyone met at Wiggins' antique shop in Gulf Breeze after the murders and gave Wiggins all the guns used in the crime.

The safe stolen from the Billings home, along with the weapons used in the home invasion, were later recovered from Wiggins' home on Ramblewood Drive.

Court documents released Tuesday reveal what was found during a search of Wiggins 2005 Chevy Venture. The most interesting items are a pair of blue jeans
with what's believed to be blood on them, a purse with $1,115 dollars in it, and a pill bottle with 39 identified pills.

The Sheriff's Office has not yet released any more information about the three persons of interest they're looking for.

News 5's Jessica Taloney is digging for new information about the Billings murder and will have the latest tonight on News 5 at 5:00 and 6:00.

Anything new going on with this one?  Saw the following on the fox site:

Pcola, I understand that they were all adopted, however, it appears there is a procedure in their handbook,(State of Florida) which allows for continued payments after adoption. Also, continued support for clothes, food, transportation, medical, etc.

I’m certainly not saying this was the case, just asking the question.

They were cetainly good to these children, and deserve respect for doing so.

The children are not in the foster care system. The Billings had adopted the children. This is completely different than the case you mentioned night owl.

It has been reported that the interior surveillance cams were functioning and they got the crime on tape. I wonder if the video supports the “lone shooter” claim from the canaries. Coldiron and the juvenile are trying to claim they were “victims” in all of this? Scared they would be killed, but not a peep to law enforcement? Yea, right. Strange things happen with the Death Penalty staring you down…

I found that the State of Florida (according to the state’s manual) pays foster parents $429, up to $440 for kids aged 0-12. It does not indicate if special needs kids cause the reimbursements to be higher.

I am guessing there are many other reimbursements at the state and federal levels.

However, no one has ever said that his couple were receiving anything from government entities for any care rendered.

There was a case, I believe in California, where a couple had in their care, a large number of kids and were making a very good living providing the servicees for the state.

As I recall, the kids were well cared for. I’ll research to see if I can find info.

Answering questions—-  I have seen reports that the Billings received $12,000/mo. from the state for the kids.  I have no idea about the cost of caring for these special needs kids, whether that is a lot or about right.
And I have read that Billings was a part owner/owner of a strip club and a topless bar in the last few years, a money man.

Curiosity is part of human nature and it goes into overdrive in a case like this.  That is why television, theaters and books are filled with such stories.  People want to know why as much as they want to know who.

This is not about one guy dropping by the house, getting angry and killing someone.  This is about some strange paramilitary action taken by a group of people that went in and out of that house within minutes, leaving two people dead.

Something very, very strange about this one.

I am way not about bashing the victims, and hope everyone takes these questions just as they are…just questions.

Sometimes the state agencies pay a lot (per month/per child) for foster/adoptive families to take care of special needs kids.

Does anyone know if this was this case here?

Also, what type of adult entertainment, and to what extent was Mr. Billings involved in?

I’m not going to guess or start rumors. I’m waiting until the police and state attorney finish the investigation. If you haven’t noticed, the suspects are rolling over like dogs expecting a treat. It will all come out eventually. And really that will not change anything. Bud & Melanie will still be dead and these criminals will still be in jail. The only thing I hope is that Pam Wiggins goes down just like the rest of them!

Where did the strip joint come into this? A used car dealer, loan shark and strip joint? That is some shady dealings. But he may in been in over his head? or may have just been at the wrong place at the wrong time…
