Florida Highway Patrol is investigating an accident that sent one man to the hospital and left another man dead. They say it happened around 1:00 o’clock Saturday morning at the intersection of Johnson Avenue and Merrie Way in Pensacola. Officers say 20-year old Omar Hernandez was speeding when he drove over the shoulder of Johnson Avenue and struck a tree. Both Hernandez and his passenger, Reynaldo Rafael, were trapped in the vehicle.
Rescue crews were able to get the two men out. Hernandez was transported to Sacred Heart Hospital with life-threatening injuries. Rafael was pronounced dead at the scene. Highway Patrol Officers say alcohol was involved with the accident and both men were not wearing their seatbelts.
