Eleven years ago this month a Fort Walton Beach woman was murdered in her home. No arrest has ever been made. It joins 51 other cold cases in the state of Florida now featured in a new crime fighting tool, playing cards and they could be the key to solving Pluma Bell Sanford's murder.
"it's been a rough road."
Sharon Kensfield is her granddaughter. "You never think it's going to hit home or it's going to hit close to you. You hear about it all over the world but did you ever think it would happen to you? Of course not, until that day."
That day came August 15, 1997 for the Sanford family. Pluma Sanford was murdered inside her home. Her case is now featured on a deck of cold case playing cards that are headed to every jail in Florida.
"This will reach all the inmates currently incarcerated in jail facilities."
For Special Agent Jay Etheridge, the cards are about getting the information into as many hands as possible. It's the third time the Florida Department of Law Enforcement has done something like this and it has been successful. "Both those cases were made based on inmates having heard other people talking. I don't know if it was other inmates talking or what but talking about having committed or being involved or knowing about a homicide."
The Sanford's want justice, but they also want to know why? "It's a three letter word but it's big," says Kensfield.
They hope the answer, is in the cards.
More than 200 thousand decks of cards will head to jail facilities throughout Florida. Inmates will be able to call Crime-Stoppers just like any other tipster. Remain anonymous and receive any reward.
