A small town is paying big bucks to try and save their school. "Half his retainer. His retainer fee was eight thousand dollars."That's the price, Century, Florida is willing to pay to try and save the only school left in town according to Mayor Freddie McCall.
"it's kind of upsetting to me to know they were going to cut the last school." Dorothy Newton's granddaughter is in the the fourth grade next year she'll have to be bused 15 miles away to Walnut Hill. "I can't understand why they want to take them out of this newly constructed school to put them at a dilapidated school where they are going to have to put up portables."
Closing schools is nothing new to Century. What used to be the high school is now a church. It was closed back in the 90's. City leaders don't want to see this happen again.
So they've hired Crestview attorney Jeff Toney.
"we're trying to get some numbers, to get some figures of where we're at and we didn't get all the figures. The lawyer agreed to draw up a proposal."
That will cost the town four thousand dollars. But the mayor says it's money well spent, if it saves the school.
"We don't want to be looked at as giving up too quick. We're going to try everything in the world."
Jeff Toney did not return our calls for an interview. He is scheduled to present his proposal to the counsel April 6th.
