A Pensacola man is dead after leading police on a chase in a stolen pickup truck.

Escambia County deputies spotted the 2006 Chevrolet Colorado, around 4:42 am Friday, headed south on Mobile Highway. When John Reed turned into the Shell Gas station at Mobile Hwy. and New Warrington Rd., deputies tried to make a traffic stop.

Reed pulled out of the parking lot and headed down Webb Lane. He did a U-turn at Webb Lane and Dogwood Drive, running over a stop sign. Reed then headed straight at the deputy, forcing him off the road.

Another deputy spotted the stolen truck on Border Street. Reed lost control and crashed into a tree at the intersection of Border and Bobe Streets. He was knocked unconscious, so deputies broke out the truck's back window in order to open the passenger door and render first aid.

Reed was transported to a local area hospital where he died from his injuries.
