11-Foot Long, 100 Pound Burmese Python Seized From Home

Florida Crestview Police say there was no cage for the snake but there were mattresses on the floor along with the clothing of small children. "With a snake that size that’s just a disaster waiting to happen.”

CRESTVIEW, Florida - The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission seized an uncaged, 11-foot long, 100 pound, albino Burmese python that was crawling around the home of a Crestview man.

26-year-old Lemuel DeJesus admitted he had a snake in his home, but refused to cooperate. DeJesus was charged with possession of a reptile of concern without a permit, housing a reptile of concern in an unsafe manner, and resisting arrest. All three charges are second-degree misdemeanors, punishable by fines of up to $500 and a maximum of 60-days in jail.

“There was no sign of a cage for the snake in the home, but the really shocking thing is there were mattresses on the floor along with the clothing of small children,” FWC Investigator Jerry Shores said. “There weren’t any children in the home when we were there, but it was obvious children were in and out of the house. With a snake that size, that’s just a disaster waiting to happen.”

The python has reportedly escaped before. It will be held at an undisclosed location until DeJesus appears before an Okaloosa County judge on November 17.

Back in July, a family's pet python strangled their 2-year-old daughter in Sumter County, Florida.

Just two weeks ago, charges were filed against a Wewahitchka man after his 11-foot-long Burmese python escaped and was killed in a neighbor’s chicken coop. John Beatty had no cage for his snake and let it freely crawl about his apartment.

Oooh Oooh! I KNOW!! Those weren’t childrens clothes…I bet they are the SNAKES!! =] Heh heh! The damn thing is so big, I’d be it would wear about a 2T…petite of course.

(punkchick) your right no one should judge him , my point is to any snake owner and this is why i moved out of florida before it became law down there , my question is why didnt he have the snake legal? every snake owner knows if you own a big constrictor in the state of florida they have to have a suitable cage , permit and mandatory microchip..
as for kids being there when the fwc showed up well there was non , the worse thing he did was resist arrest , i cant blame him but as any of us know its not smart to fight the feds that way but there are other ways to do that .
my best advise as i said before keep your snakes out of the public eye period ! in my opinion if you dont your asking for trouble with th fwc who has nothing else to do but set pet snake owners up or move out of state like i did and enjoy them in your new home . the thing is all snake owners will be in trouble if they pass the banning law of all pythons and boas down there, people lock you snake up when your not home or the fwc will take them from you .

This also reminds me….

In 2001, an estimated 42% of dog bites (or 154,625) occurred in children age 14 and younger.

So how is it that owning a dog around children is acceptable?

There again, not knowing the facts. Not knowing these people, you don’t know the situation. There are no small children in that house. Clothes being found is not evidence of children around the snake.
And if there WERE children there, that’s the child’s parents fault for bringing them around the snake. Not the owner. Yes, he has to take some responsibility, but the parents should know better, if there were an actual threat. But hey, really, all you have to do is be a parent and supervise your children!!!
But children’s clothing isn’t proof of children around the snake. It’s just proof that there are children’s clothing in the house.

Oi! Oi! Punkchick!

Stick it to the man!

*moonstomps circles around you*

dangerous situations are a disaster waiting to happen. i wouldn’t have a snake in my home, personally, but a lot of people do. i just wish the proper precautions would be taken to insure the safety of everyone. small children around this snake? very ignorant, dangerous and unnecessary.

I know this guy personally, and anyone who has any kind of intelligence knows that the media paints the picture they WANT you to see. Unless you know the facts, you really shouldn’t judge anyone. Who are any of you to judge this man, especially knowing only what is given to you by the media.

Just because this pet wasn’t a cute & cuddly puppy doesn’t mean it wasn’t loved the way someone loves the “normal” family pet.

People will take you more seriously if you use proper grammar and spell check.

this is what happens when you dont follow the rules, this man could have avoided all this mess if he would have had the snake legal with a permit, microchip and in a secure cage.. now i dont live in florida because i dont trust the fwc period i own 2 burmese python but do have them microchipped and in secure cages and also a exoctic pet permit .
on this case with this man in florida owning a loose burmese python was just asking for trouble since mr bobby cheever was a victom of the fwc while he was out of town in west virginia he never got a permit because he was moving in 2 days away from florida got taken advantage of by a nosey next door naibor which i beleave was a set up any way we at virginia python rescue ask the local snake owners all over the state of florida to please please get your snakes legal and keep them out of the public eye for your protection and ask the fwc to stop pinpointing respocible snake owners .
people leave your snakes inside and follow the laws to own these snakes .
thank you

Does some one actually live there? It looks filthy. Maybe thats what the snake is for to kill the rats in the house, he does not look under fed
