WASHINGTON (AP) - President Barack Obama is promising to delivermore than 600,000 jobs through his $787 billion stimulus plan this
summer, with federal agencies pumping billions into public works
projects, schools and summer youth programs.
Many of the stimulus projects that Obama said will save or
create jobs this summer already were in the works at military bases
and airports, on roads and in school districts. Obama is promising
an accelerated pace of federal stimulus spending this summer
designed to boost the nation's ailing economy and produce jobs.
The president's announcement comes days after the government
reported that the number of unemployed people continues to rise,
and the unemployment rate now is at 9.4 percent, the highest in
more than 25 years.
