DEARBORN, Mich. (AP) - Ford Motor says it is offering a payment protection plan to help reassure consumers who may be putting off a
car purchase because of worries about losing their job.

The offer comes as auto sales have been battered by the recession and tight credit.

Ford said Tuesday it will cover payments of up to $700 each month for up to a year on any new Ford, Lincoln or Mercury vehicle
if consumers lose their jobs. The program runs until June 1.

Hyundai Motor Co. has been offering a deal that allows buyers to return a vehicle within a year if they can't make the payments due
to a job loss or disability.

Dearborn, Mich.-based Ford is also offering zero percent financing on certain vehicles.

Thanks for the info bamabob. I have always had a theory rolltide, that if it sounds too good to be true, it probably is. I would rather have 0% interest, than cash rebates, etc. But I still won’t be buying a new car as long as the other one is running/or fixable.

Here’s an article that discusses a little bit more of the details of these programs and it touches on some of the issues I previously spoke about.  It appears that they may actually make the payments.  You do, however, forfeit all other incentives, such as cash rebates and you must pay full sticker price.  You would be better off paying full sticker and taking the rebate in cash verses paying full sticker and forfeiting the rebate.  Stick the rebate in the bank in case you lose your job.

You can do it all online, but if you transfer money electronically, it takes a few days for it to clear.  You could call the local office and ask if there is a way around that.

Something spooked Ford today and it closed at $2.63.  It was my only loser for the day.

So, I can just walk in and give them $100 or whatever? Or do I do it online? All my other stuff is diversified through mutual funds and in 401k and IRA-so I don’t know how you do the regular stock market.

I use scottrade.com but there are plenty of choices.  Scottrade does have a local office and you don’t have to be a big wheeler dealer for them to pay attention to you.

It’s a gamble for sure, but I think Ford will do alright in time.  Still afraid of gm because if they go into bankruptcy all is lost for the common stock holders.

OK-so how do I buy Ford stock? Is there a certain website, like E-trade that I should use?

I think that you are making a wise move with the Ford stock Bama.  The heave avoided negative publicity throughout the auto collapse.  The already have and will gain a lot more customers from GM and Chrystler.  I think that when the market recovers in a few years that those of us buying Ford stock now will be sitting real pretty.  But what do I know… I’m just an ol’ Bama boy.

I can’t bring myself to buy new again either and I don’t ever like their finance plans.  The new wears off quick and the monthly notes linger on for years.

I bet there really are some bargains out there, if a person is ready to make that move.

I garbled that last comment.  I meant when GM and Chrysler re-negotiate labor contracts.

I just dumped a tech stock that has been a consistent loser for me while it was up slightly and bought some more Ford while it is down. I’m rollin’ the dice!  lol
