WASHINGTON (AP) - Congressional leaders are reviewing three
separate survival plans as they consider whether to call lawmakers
to a special session on an auto bailout.
GM says it needs a $4 billion loan this month -- $12 billion in
loans overall plus a $6 billion line of credit.
Chrysler says it needs $7 billion in loans by year's end.
Ford is seeking access to a $9 billion line of credit just in
case one of the other companies fails.
Top auto executives are ditching corporate jets and
road-tripping the more than 500 miles from Detroit to Washington in
fuel-efficient hybrid cars for congressional hearings tomorrow and
Friday.
The CEOs of Ford and GM also say they're ready to have their pay
slashed to $1 a year if their companies get government cash.
Chrysler says its boss already gets a $1 salary.

What is wrong with these businessmen? In the late 70’s they were told to make more fuel efficient cars. I recall the Dodge Colt had about the best mileage of any produced then. In fact, in thirty years, what American company has made a car with better gas mileage? Idiots. Put some of your profit into research and give the Public what they need instead of telling us what we want.

Well said, DEW26M. Make no mistake though, the government will give the big 3 the bailout money. What you will see as a prequel to this will be the Unions putting on a show for the public and congress to try to win sympathy. They will use the excuse of lost jobs and wage cuts etc. Now, while this is somewhat true and I do feel for these individuals who are affected by this, you have to look at the realistic side of the equation. Some of these union workers make 95% of their salary when they are not working. You do the math. The CEO’s of the big 3 realize that their products are going the way of the dinosaur, and so they need this “bailout” to secure their retirement funds, multiple houses, mistresses, private jets etc. It is simply greed. This money will not change the ultimate outcome of their repective companies failure one bit. Once the government gives them this money, they will continue on as they have and will use the excuse that Congress waited too long to help them…blah blah.

I bet GM is wishing now that they had of properly allocated that 1 billion dollars they used to engineer the new Escalade Hybrid! Maybe they should be concentrating on cars that sale for less than 65,000$ that more people can afford. On a side note, if a man who usually makes 10 million a year says that he’s willing to work for 1$ per year, than someone better be weighing him when he comes to work, and weighing him when he leaves; cause he’s bound to be stealing way more than you can see.

I hope they send them back to Detroit with their tails between their legs.

The whole “$1” salary is a gimmick…just like their sales strategies for their vehicles. If they would practice honest business ethics, they wouldn’t be in this situation. I find it to be a huge slap in the face to the american public that once again, we the taxpayers are bailing out these overpaid CEO’s. Thats all that this is…a pad for their retirement accounts. I say let them fail…let them go under. Let the unions restructure and let the Big 3 revise it’s archaic business model to a more realistic approach. These bail-outs are begining to become commonplace and before long, you will see all types of company CEO’s jumping on this bandwagon as a way of life at the expense of the taxpayers…and it will still fail in the end. Now our government will not only own the financial and real estate markets, but also the automobile markets as well…and soon after, probably the retail and food service industries. These bailouts are bad news…wait and see.
