BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (AP) - Birmingham public schools are facing a
$5 million budget cut because of declining enrollment.
The number of students attending the schools is down nearly 900
this year compared to last year. That's after the district lost
about 1,300 students last year, which decreased state funding by
$8.7 million.
This fall's enrollment is 27,525.
Shelby County schools picked up 630 students, which means the
system is within 400 students of overtaking Birmingham schools.
Jefferson County, the largest district with more than 36,000
students, gained 74 students.
The state gives schools about $6,500 per student in state
funding annually based on the previous year's enrollment.
