MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) - The State Personnel Board has voted tojoin a lawsuit by two state workers against Nationwide Life
Insurance Co. and the Alabama State Employees Association.
The board voted 2-1 on Wednesday to join the two employees who
allege that the union agreed to a bad pension deal for state
workers with Nationwide while receiving substantial annual payments
from the company in return.
Board Chairman Joe Dickson said he thought the personnel board's
duty to protect employees required that the state enter into the
suit. James Anderson, who voted against legal action, wanted the
board to gather information without taking sides.
Union Executive Director Mac McArthur and his lawyer, Joe Espy,
did not return calls Thursday for comment. Espy has said the suit
is unfounded and is seeking its dismissal. A Nationwide spokesman
said in a statement to the Press-Register Tuesday that the company
disagrees with the allegations.
