A Texas oil tycoon says America should act now and stop depending on foreign oil. T.Boone Pickens says the energy crisis is an emergency we can't drill our way out of. The oil man is now spending a lot of money to get support for his new plan. Pickens say the answer is wind power. He sat down with CBS anchor Katie Couric.

Lee308- Unless they’ve got a nuclear power plant hidden closer than Dothan I’m not living by one. But even at that distance a melt down would make Mobile county uninhabitable for hundreds of years and mistakes will be made. I hold an FCC license,Amateur radio license and a few other diplomas so I could work, when i worked, on government bases and equiptment. There is Ohms laws for d/c as well as a/c circuits and I have used both for over 40 years. Anyone that thinks increased drilling and refining is going to solve all our future and present energy problems is probably why we’re at where we are now. These proposed wind mills will do a great job in helping to secure a better outlook for our next generations, but they are just a piece needed, just like more domestic oil production. I’m all for more domestic oil and nuclear power but it needs to be done in a responsible way to ensure a better future for all our children for many years to come.

DEW26M , did it say how many barrells a day those wells produce?

After answering your question, I was left wondering to myself, so I did a little research!
__
North America’s first commercial oil well was drilled in Ontario in 1858!
__
Most of the crude oil and natural gas used in Ontario comes from western Canada, but significant quantities are also produced from wells located in southern Ontario. Oil and gas are valuable resources and their production can be a source of revenue for landowners.

Exploration for oil and natural gas is a very risky, expensive and technically complex business. The typical cost of drilling and completing a commercial gas or oil well in Ontario ranges from $100,000 to $500,000.

The North American petroleum industry began in 1858 in Lambton County. In the resulting rush of fortune-seekers, thousands of wells were drilled. As many as 50,000 wells may have been drilled in Ontario, although records are available for only 20,000. Currently 100 oil wells and 1200 gas wells produce in commercial quantities.

No MA’AM, I live in Ontario, very few oil wells up here, I do believe the majority of them are to the West in such provinces as British Columbia, and Alberta. I have seen a couple of Antique Oil Wells in these parts, that are no longer used. I’m not saying there is none at all in Ontario, but they must be few and far between if they are. The Government in Ontario try’s to keep this Province one of beauty, and therefore probably limits huge oil well installation.

DEW26M , have you seen the oil fields in canada? i am just wondering because we import most of our oil from them.

Yes, you are right, drilling for more oil will answer everyone’s problems. Some things just aren’t worth arguing about.  rolleyes

Lee308 , from what i have read on windmills, etc.
you are right on the money. we need to drill and drill now. nuclear energy is also the answer. all this windmill stuff is just to fund pork. if wind mills were the answer, russia and china would be nothing but wind mills. also can you imagine how many wind mills it would take to run a nation like the united states.  wind mills are pretty in holland, but not to run a nation.

Dear Carl, you might live by one now. Look at the link to this map and see how many NUCLEAR plants are SAFELY operating NOW. Oh, I’ve been an electrician for 30 yrs and E=IxR is used for DC circuits, just FYI! You’ve been watching to many movies…... DEW, there are few if any “foreign oil” fired power plants. Coal, yes, oil, no…... Solar and wind power is great on a sailboat, even they have to run the generator to keep batteries charged, but not usable at home unless your house if off grid and on batteries and not using washing machines, cloths dryer,stove,A/C,water heater. No thanks….drill here and build Nuclear is the answer for the future…......

He’s pushing windmills because they are a RENEWABLE ENERGY SOURCE, we can not depend on OIL forever. Sure, true enough, we may not run out in our lifetime, but what about our children/grandchildren? He along with several others are thinking ahead into the future, something we should have done 100 years ago when we decided we were to good to use our feet and horses to get around! Our own laziness brought us to where we are today(paying over 4$ for GAS). We always looking for a answer and a way TODAY, rather than thinking ahead, as to what is gonna become in the future! I’m all for it, windmills, solar energy, algae refineries, PS10, I think the more we got the better, they are practically harmless to the environment, and release minimal byproducts.

As to the talk about Nuclear Reactors, the way I see it, as close as I am to it; by the time the alarm sounds, I should have enough time to call my wife and kids, and tell them I LOVE THEM, then bend over, stick my head between my legs..

These windmills are to be one part of many parts on the way to energy independance, and where they will be located in he desiginated corridor,at any time most will be generating needed power. Comparing home heating unit deaths to a nuclear reactor accident is like comparing a car crash to a jumbo jet crash multiplied many times. Anyone that wants to live close to a nuclear power plant you just go right ahead, I think I’ll take the wind mills and other alternatives. Nuclear power plants are fine in isolated areas, just in case of a melt down or leaks. Wind, Solar, and increased drilling and refining and others are all needed. And Lee308 to help you get a better handle on figuring your wattage needs get a copy of OHM’S LAW FORUMULAS FOR A-C CIRCUITS or either buy a plug in watt meter for around $30 and save that AC unit an refridgerator. You’ll need that money for these power bills for this summer.
