A new trade in parrot heads and tail feathers is adding to the pressure on the world’s wild population of African Grey Parrots, which is confined to the tropical forest area of West and Central Africa.

This is highlighted by a recent post by the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) from Cameroon, which reports on a suspect arrested by game rangers who was found to be carrying 353 parrot heads and 2000 tail feathers. The suspect stated that he had collected the material for a witch doctor who was treating his mentally ill brother.

The African Grey Parrot (Psittacus erithacus) is a medium-sized parrot, endemic to the rainforests of West and Central Africa. The birds are highly valued for their beauty and ability to mimic humans - they cost a minimum of US$ 500 each.

Between 1994 & 2003 more than 450 000 parrots were captured and exported under controls that required a permit from a national authority to certify that the export was not detrimental to the species in the wild. However, this trade along with illegal capturing, exceeding of quotas and other demands resulted in considerable stress on the African Grey populations. As a result and following investigation, the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES) recommended zero export quotas for several range states and decided to develop regional management plans for the species. In particular it recommended a two-year ban on the export of African Grey Parrots from Cameroon. It is interesting that the United States and the EU have banned the import of wild caught parrots since 1992 and 2007 respectively.

This introduction of regulated trade does not effect the illegal export of African Grey Parrots, which is apparently quite well established although very inefficient. For example, it is believed that about 15,000 birds are taken out of the Lobeke region of Cameroon every year but that almost half of these die in transit due to poor handling.

The constraints on the movement of live parrots has probably contributed to this even more threatening trade in heads and feathers, which are more easily stored and transported. The market for these products in not yet understood. Balla Ottou, a leader in Cameroon’s wildlife management, thinks the heads are probably mainly exported to India and China and the tails to Nigeria. This needs to be clarified so that the authorities can develop counter strategies
Unfortunately this kind of trade is likely to flourish as the financial difficulties of the world bite deeper and the unemployed poor in Africa become more and more desperate.

Interestingly a search of ebay, shows that there is a substantial trade in the red feathers of the African Grey. The feathers appear to be used for craft and fly fishing. On 24/01/2009 there were 16 auctions for feathers with one seller parrotinthegarden having 125 feathers on auction, supposedly molted by his African Grey Pandora! These feathers sell for from 50c to just over a dollar each. Another person sells African Grey Tail feathers as “Pluma De Loro Africano” for religious purposes at US$ 7 each!

Aww, Dew, don’t get your panties in a wad. I wasn’t being mean spirited! You just read it that way! I guess since you don’t know me you couldn’t picture the big grin and playfulness when I called you a crackhead.

Rose, if substance abuse means higher IQ, does that mean my 132 might go to a 150 if I start doing something stronger than pot?

sorry off topic. the rail road is pretty big up there?  dew i am going to start a forum topic about canada. i would like to know more. farming is it pretty big up there? i do not think you are anti american, you just call things as you see them. wether i agree or not.

rosepetal, I don’t wanna talk Canada up too much, because sure as I do someone ignorant will come in here calling me an Anti-American. I will tell you this, Canada looks out for the little guy. You don’t have to be dirt poor and be on welfare to get kickbacks from the government. They have subsidy after subsidy, tax cuts on tax cuts. This on top of a free health care system. It’s nice that I didn’t have to be on welfare or have $7,000 in my pocket to have my daughter. Don’t get me wrong, they get their money in other ways. If you are an Alcoholic or a Chain-Smoker you better stay clear. A 6-pack of Bud-Light is $11.95 and a pack of CHEAP Cigarettes is $9.50 unless you buy illegal Cigarettes from the reserves. Payroll taxes are about 6% higher per week here above the US. However I get a lot more back here at tax time than I did in the US. They have a great child tax credit, in which you get so much a month depending on your annual income and number of children(I think the cut-off is 3). This is not to be confused with welfare, you must be employed in order to receive it. It don’t matter if you make 10K or 250K however, you get a monthly check called a Child Tax Credit. Then if you have a child under 6 you get a Universal Child Care Benefit of $100 a month. Me and my wife have been taking the money and investing it in into RESP accounts for our two children. Mostly because we can afford to pay our bills, and still have plenty left over. I try to keep myself a cushion. I like to keep enough in the bank to be safe in case of emergency. Unlike most who like to spend and extend themselves to the full extent of their income. wink

i think we need to take better care of our farmers. more grants etc. instead of creating more american made cars, we should concentrate on american grown food. never import food from another country. dew, what help does canada give farmers? if you know.

mobileguy48, you know I got to thinking about it. If it ever come to the world having to live off of that in which was grown on their own, mankind will cease to exist. These new generations will not have a clue how to grow anything, much less feed anything and take care of it. What is the future for mankind? I just heard on the news, that farmers are dropping off more and more. The problem is, no one is replacing them. Kids don’t look forward to a hard life working in the fields all day. They want a job with air conditioning and Blue-Cross/Blue-Shield insurance, and who can blame them. Uncle Sam don’t offer nearly as many tax cuts to the farmer as he does to the man who owns the store, who is selling the farmers goods.

i just can not eat meat, had an employee from napal who would not eat meat or anything with animal products. such as cakes etc. most meat served today is not good for you. sorry i should have cleared that vegeterian remark up.

@rosepetal

I know kx is going to say it, so I’ll beat her to the punch.

Vegetarians don’t eat meat, poultry, or fish.
Vegans don’t eat (or if it is for ethical reasons, even use) any animal products.
Pescatarians are vegetarians who still eat seafood.

well kx, that was a very mean remark toward dew. he is one of the biggest animal lovers on these boards. and one of the smartest. studies show most chemical addicted people have very high iq’s. we all have flaws. as for the vegeterain part i am not a true vegeterian. a true vegeterian does not eat anything with egg or animal product, like lard. i love cakes, i still eat seafood.

@DEW26M

Hey, I didn’t say that it would be easy, pleasant, or desired.  Hell, it wouldn’t even be possible in the short-term.  But it would be possible, and one day it could even be necessary.

I would hate to see a Nation of 303,824,640 people turn vegetarian. Where do you suppose we would plant all of those vegetables? It takes approximately 7-8 weeks or less to raise a chicken for slaughter. How long does it take a vegetable to grow? Hundreds of thousands of chickens can be raised in a square acre. How many Tomatoes can you grow on that same property? And how filling is a tomato? Humans have been carnivores since the beginning of time. Even if only 50% of the population decided to turn vegan, you’d still have a problem supplying 151,912,320 people with enough vegetables to keep them healthy and full. I don’t care, cause I’m a MEAT EATER, and I’ll die that way, unless a doctor prescribes me otherwise.
