Officials say demand is high while supplies are low after several refineries in Texas shutdown because of Ike. But while the cost of wholesale fuel has gone up corporations like Chevron say they can't control how much you're being charged at the pump. "It's up to the people at the local retail level who own and operate those Chevron and Texaco stations to set the price as determined by market forces in their area,"Said a spokesman for Chevron. But at the rate that these prices continue to rise some people feel like that isn't always the case and they're calling it a rip off. "It's gouging that's all it is, price gouging,"Said John Kennan while waiting to fill up his tank. "That's what people are looking at that's the aggravation you know, if it would stay at one price, it wouldn't be that bad,"Said Shawn Robin who stopped to get gas while on his way to Louisiana.
Price gouging laws went into effect yesterday after Governor Bob Riley issued a state of emergency.
The law says anyone caught raising the price gas more than 25 percent, will have to pay a thousand dollar fine. You can report price gouging to the Alabama Attorney General's Office at 1-800-392-5658. The State of Florida has also set up a price gouging hotline at 1-800-435-7352.
