Whether you call it dirt, or "potting media" like the professionals, people seem to be spending a lot more on soil. “They used to check out for 40 to 50 dollars and now it's 60 dollars or 75 and they want you to go over the receipt, but as long as they have success in the garden, they want to keep coming back,” says President of Zimlich’s Patio and Garden Center, Donald Zimlich. Their signature potting media features finely ground bits of pine bark. In recent years, industries have found other uses for this specialized material.
“It can be used to run steam plants so what used to be considered almost trash or incidental to the industry has become very valuable,” says Zimlich. Two years ago this stuff would probably cost you $3.50 at retail, today its about 6 bucks. Zimlich says the cost of fertilizer has also exploded, making potting mixtures pricier.
“The affect of petroleum also affects the price of those items and they've gone up more like 44%,” says Zimlich.
