Researchers at the University of South Alabama have been carefully collecting data from the Alabama Deep Sea Fishing Rodeo since the mid 1980's. This year, they're reconstructing 75 years of fishing rodeo history to get a more complete picture of the gulf.

“We couldn't get the diversity we couldn't cover the range,” says USA Marine Science Department Chairman Dr. Bob Shipp. “These guys are fishing well over 100 miles off shore. They're fishing off Louisiana; they're fishing off the panhandle. In a way, it's like having 3000 research vessels out at one time.”

The data show how certain species of large sharks have been on the decline since the early 1980's. Other species of popular fish continue to thrive.

“King mackerel is one we see large individuals yellow fin tuna we're still seeing large individuals and still seeing records set for those species,” says Associate Professor Sean Powers. The researchers say they're also seeing global warming's impact on fish populations. Their findings should eventually be published in a scientific journal later this year.
