PEAPACK-GLADSTONE, N.J. (AP) - The cast and crew of "Guiding Light" - TV's longest-running soap opera - have finished shooting their final scenes in a northern New Jersey town.

Afterward, they gathered at Peapack Reformed Church for a service to remember the show. The church has served as the site for weddings and funerals in "Guiding Light's" fictional town of Springfield.

The Rev. Kathryn Henry recalled that the show's title referred to a lamp put in a church window by the fictional Rev. Rutledge to welcome parishioners seeking guidance.

CBS has canceled the program after a 72-year run that predates television. "Guiding Light" will air its last episode on Sept. 18.

Yvonna Wright, who plays Mel Boudreau Bauer, says Tuesday's service offered some closure.

I used my parents dining room table for a playhouse when I was a very little girl. I can remember that my Mom would listen to Guiding Light while I played quietly under there. And..I’ve been a loyal viewer of Guiding Light ever since I married in Dec of 62. I get a great big lump in my throat when I think about it being canceled. I am really going to miss it. But I like how the writers and producers are tying up
all of the loose ends by having many of the old characters return to Springfield. I love all of the characters. Yes, even that old ogre, Alan.
I look forward to seeing many of the actors and actresses continue their careers. If not as a soap opera star, in some other TV Series, Movie, etc. It is true that all good things must come to an end.  But hopefully this is not the end for any of them. Thanks, all of you at Guiding Light for a wonderful ride.  Judy Williams
