“Like photosynthesis, might not be something a kid wants to take off the shelves at first,” says Mississippi Capstone Publishers Representative. “But when it's in this format it really adds to their interest and doesn't take away from the word count or number of pages.”
Central's library lost everything after Hurricane Katrina. 70% of its books are donations. This recent shipment is thanks to a $50,000 grant from the Laura bush foundation. School librarian Debbie Bellamy says most 5th graders leave reading at a third grade level. Part of the grant money pays for multi media books the kids can look at and listen to at home.
“Get them interested first and once we get them hooked on the books then we're brining them in and giving them the hard copies,” says Bellamy. The online books are designed to hit more of the senses. Bellamy says the spoken word helps struggling readers.
“Unfortunately a lot of our kids hear the street language and the wrong pronunciations for words so we're really trying to hit that correct sounds,” Bellamy says.
