WASHINGTON (AP) - Your child's teacher may need some time in
summer school.
A new study concludes elementary-school teachers are poorly
prepared to teach math.
A report being released today by the National Council on Teacher
Quality looked at the teacher education programs at 77 colleges and
universities. And it says they don't spend enough time teaching
teachers how to teach math. The consequences are particularly
telling for elementary school children since math relies heavily on
cumulative knowledge.
The report also criticizes the tests that education students
take when they complete their coursework. In many cases, the
prospective teachers are judged on an overall score, meaning they
could do badly on the math portion but still pass if they do well
in other areas.

Well I am sure any teacher with a college degree has the ability to teach math. However, with the no child left behind law and the fact that a lot of children don’t get help at home, the actual outcome of math scores is a product of the two aforementioned reasons. If little Johnny keeps that seat warm all year long the teacher just about can’t fail him or she is blamed for not teaching. The teachers get blamed for scores when actually little Johnny probably knows that will work in his favor and none of it can be his fault.

Teachers are not allowed to teach, their job is micro managed by the school board and they have to do paperwork and complete reports, keep looking over their shoulder, grovel for their jobs, put up with parents lack of interest, kids rudeness and lack of interest, etc, etc.

I’m sure all the billboards around town that say 1+1=3 doesn’t help much either.
