Geretha Tyese Lewis, 18, is charged as an adult with capital murder. A hearing to determine whether she'll be granted youthful offender status, which would limit her sentence to a maximum of three years, was postponed because results of a mental evaluation were not ready, according to prosecutors.
It's been nearly a year since Lewis reported her 4-week-old baby, Zarial Lewis, was missing. In July 2007, the infant's mom told police Zarial was kidnapped by two women posing as representatives from an adoption agency.
After a massive search turned up few leads, investigators say the young mom finally admitted to killing the baby herself.
During the preliminary hearing last year, investigators told the court Lewis confessed to suffocating the baby with a plastic bag, then dumping the lifeless body in a trash can at the home she shared with her mom in Prichard. Prosecutors believe the body ended up 70 miles away at a the Allied Waste Landfill in Brewton, but search teams were unable to make a recovery.
The youthful offender hearing is rescheduled for August. A trial date has not yet been set.
