LOS ANGELES (AP) - A Missouri mother is facing sentencing for
her role in a MySpace hoax directed at a 13-year-old neighbor girl
who later killed herself.
Lori Drew could get up to three years in prison if she's
sentenced in a Los Angeles courtroom Thursday after being convicted
in November on three misdemeanor counts of accessing computers
without authorization.
But a defense motion to dismiss the convictions has received a
lengthy review from U.S. District Judge George Wu, who delayed
Drew's sentencing in May to review the testimony of two prosecution
witnesses.
Drew's case has drawn much attention as the nation's first
cyberbullying trial.
Prosecutors say Drew helped create a fictitious teen boy and
sent flirtatious messages to Megan Meier on the social networking
site.

I just wish parents would WAKE UP and realize what their teenagers are doing on the internet.

http://www.myspace.com/mrjustice

Here’s one that was made up by some local “scene girls” to be mean to other “scene girls” a few years ago.

When I was FIFTEEN I got a computer, but it was in the living room, and my mother took the power cable with her to work, insuring I could only use it UNDER HER SUPERVISION. Until I was 17, the computer was ONLY for research, writing papers, and playing games.

I don’t buy into that argument about the girl’s mother.  This “adult” female setup a false identity with the specific purpose of gaining the child’s trust, taunting her, humiliating her and eventually pushing her into suicide.

It’s regrettable that the girl’s mother did not notice the mood changes quickly enough, but it is pretty understandable.  Kids moving from adolescence to teenagers go through radical mood swings on a daily basis.  They also become much more tuned into their peers and less so of their parents.

I am sorry KxVicious…I think this is the first time that I don’t agree with you….I dont see how you can blame the mother of the child….

Should the mother of the deseaced also be charged? Maybe with willfull neglect? The internet is a very powerful, very dangerous thing in the wrong hands. Her mother obviously was not monitoring what this child was doing online, and is equally responsible for the death of the child.

Clay - This story outraged me from the beginning and made me want to kick some butt!  What a twisted whack job this woman is and she is getting a pass, imo.  13-year-old little girls are very vulnerable and easily influenced by others.  This woman killed that child just the same as if she had gone over there with a gun and did it face-to-face!

Cowardly pig!  Fry her!

Like you stated Debbie. It is hard enough trying to fit in with kids your age, but when you have an adult that the child is suppose to look up to or respect doing the same things if not worse than what you have to deal with on a regular basis going to school or making friends it becomes hard to have much self- esteem. They think it is harmless fun but it is not. Thankfully what this woman did did not effect me in a negative way and I was able to be stronger and see how immature it was which led me to be more respectful to others but not everyone is that fortunate. Unlike when we grow and get older, Most, not all, realize how someone else talking about you does not make it true because we have had time to become comfortable with who we are and we know that someone saying something is not going to make it true. Young teens and kids however do not understand that yet. They are still trying to figure out who they are so if someone that is suppose to be an authority figure is saying and doing these things than sometimes they come to feel that it is true

You know I had something similar happen to me when I was younger. It had nothing to do with the internet, but this guy I was dating had mom that was always trying to act like a 16 year old instead of his mother. Anyway she apparently did not like me because when we were dating he was not their to pick her up when she was drunk or “take care of the house”. She would always be hanging out with kids our age and would constantly be starting rumors about me and calling me names to my boyfriend and his friends when I was not around. My boyfriend got into several fights about it with her, but I told him not to worry about it because I knew the stuff she said was just her blowing smoke. Needless to say after we broke up a few years had passed and this guy I worked with would sometimes hangout with my ex and when I told him I knew him he apparently mentioned my name when he was over there one night and my ex’s mom was there. His mom proceeded to start talking about me again and the guy I worked with told her are you sure you are talking about the same girl because that does not sound like her. That is when my ex told him she just does not like anyone I date or have dated because if I am with someone I will not be able to be at her rescue when she gets trashed or is drunk out of her mind and can not take care of my little brother. Of course what this woman was saying bothered me when she first started it because I was only 15, but as I got older it did not really phase me.

bob i’ll put her in the chair and strap her down, you fire up the generator. this woman is a troll. few stories have outraged me as much as this one over the years. fry the troll

this is all so sad. our kids are desperate to fit in and try anything to stay popular and here is this “mom”? hurting this girl and laughing. Yes, our kids do not understand the dangers of online predators, but this mom is also one of them,a predator. it should be added as a charge against her, she willingly set out to attack and hurt this neighbor which i dont think should be just a misdemeanor. again, our laws are so pointless that it just doesnt get through to people or the next one that does this sort of thing….why cant we just start off strict. she is directly responsible for the death of this girl, why not involuntary manslaughter charges?
