called a flawed system, Mississippi has begun making appointments
to a task force created to study better methods for collecting and
preserving DNA evidence.
The state's handling of criminal investigations involving DNA
came under intense scrutiny earlier this year after two innocent
Noxubee County men who had spent several years in prison on murder
charges were freed, in part, because of DNA evidence. One of the
men, Kennedy Brewer, had been on death row.
Chief Justice Jim Smith, who will convene the task force in
coming weeks, has named Tchula Mayor Yvonne Brown as his
appointment. Other task force members include Democratic Reps. Ed
Blackmon of Canton, Sherra Lane of Waynesboro, and Bob Evans of
Monticello.
