BARTOW, Fla. (AP) - Inmates at one central Florida jail won't be
eating quite as well thanks to budget cuts.
Polk County Sheriff Grady Judd announced Wednesday that inmates
will no longer get chocolate milk, coffee and juice as he strives
to cut $200,000 from the jail budget.
Guests of the county will also get frozen egg patties for
breakfast instead of fresh eggs and just one piece of bread instead
of two. Peanut butter-and-jelly sandwiches are also off the menu
and fresh milk will give way to the powdered stuff. The jail has
already substituted crackers for cornbread.
Jail officials made the changes with the help of a dietitian.
Judd says if inmates want fancier fare, "they need to behave,
quit violating the law, and stay out of the county jail."

Give a vitamin with their bread and water-should meet all the nutritional requirements. People in Asian countries live just fine on minimal meat, with a concentration on rice and noodles and vegetables-cheap food. Sure not everyone is guilty, but probably 98% are, and if not, why put yourself in a circumstance where you would be arrested in the first place-ie..running with the wrong crowd, etc.

Personally, I think the welfare system and free lunches need to be re-evaluated too. I am NOT saying take food away from babies and children. But some of these people on welfare, live higher on the hog than I do, as well as some families who “qualify” for free lunch. I personally think, that school lunches should be a set price across the board, because it is not fair for me to pay $2 for my child’s lunch, when in essence I am paying for 3 kids lunches-mine,plus 2"free lunches.” jmo

Ya know, now they think it might be cilantro that has the salmonella thing going on.  I always knew that stuff was nasty!

Send Jack Tillman to Florida to teach them how to feed them on a buck a day and still put a fortune in their own pockets!

Yea! that sounds like a pretty good idea, use them for Canaries to check out the food before it gets to the open market.

Let them eat tomatoes and peppers, before they go to the open market!

I think it is strange that people scream about children who qualify for free lunches or food stamps. Apparently, they do not deserve basic nutrition because it’s welfare, yet they want prisoners coddled. In this wealthy country, there are plenty of children starving with malnutrition. At least make sure every child has access to formula and milk before we offer criminals the good stuff.

Let them eat cake!

If someone is in jail 90% of those people have had a trial and been found guilty.  Once a guilty person goes to jail they have cable TV and 3 meals a day.  If you are a criminal then you should be treated that way.  Locked up and feed the most basic amount of food possible.  It is suppose to be punishment not summer camp.

I have no doubt that there are a FEW people in jail that shouldn’t be there and we should do our best to get them out but I’m willing to bet at least 95% of them are exactly where they need to be, in jail and being punished for their crimes! How else can we hope to teach them to look harder for alternative ways to solve their problems for those that are salvageable. Others are a whole list of predators in there. They’re not going to starve on a hot dog and a bowl of grits a day. They may be hungry for a while until the stomach shrinks a bit but they wont starve. They certainly don’t deserve better treatment than a heck of a lot of our children get! And as KxVx said reduced calories has been shown to increase a body’s health and life span. We need a better penal system that separates prisoners according to the severity of their crimes but we have to work with what we got until then.
