For about an hour, everything stopped on a busy section of Fort Morgan Road. Traffic was detoured around a white, Chevy Suburban surrounded by evidence markers.
Police were called after Charles and Carla Malatesta were found bleeding and unresponsive in their SUV. Police say Charles Malatesta was holding a .38 caliber revolver. Both he and his wife had gunshot wounds to the head.
Harold and Vanessa Caudle live nearby and heard a chopper land. "I just thought somebody was flying in over to the facility next to our subdivision," says Harold. But instead, it was a medical helicopter flying Charles to USA Medical Center.
"It's unbelievable you know, we thought maybe there was a car wreck, somebody trying to pass somebody. It's unbelievable," says Vanessa.
Carla died on the way to the hospital.
Police continue their investigation of what they are calling a murder-suicide attempt.
Detectives tell News Five the couple had been experiencing health and financial issues.
