TUSCALOOSA, Ala. (AP) - A federal judge has sentenced formerAlabama Fire College Director W. L. Langston to more than 10 years
in prison for his conviction on theft, fraud, conspiracy and other
charges.
U.S. District Judge Scott Coogler also on Wednesday ordered
Langston to pay $1.4 million in restitution to the state. Coogler
told Langston he thought he had gotten greedy and violated the
public trust.
Langston was accused of using his position as director of the
Fire College to steal more than $1.5 million in taxpayer money to
help himself, his family, friends and other state officials.
The allegations included that he was involved in deals to employ
the children of high-ranking two-year college system officials in
jobs where little work was performed.
Langston's prosecution was part of an extensive federal
investigation of Alabama's two-year college system.
