Kathy Allison was gunned down Sunday afternoon in the Lottie Community of Baldwin County. Police say her son-in-law, Jim Dorriety has confessed to the murder. Family members say the whole situation didn't have to happen.
"We seen Jim up there, and she seen Jim had a gun. She told me to get down and he killed her. He shot her and shot her and shot her more than one time."
Kathy Allison's children are angry. "Had law enforcement not dropped the ball and done their damn job like they were suppose to, my Mom would still be alive today," says son D.J. Jowers.
Allison was gunned down Sunday. Invesitgtors say her son-in-law has confessed. Jim Dorriety is married to April. She says her Mother was just trying to protect her, "Mama thought he had me and Gracie in the woods and that's why she was in the truck headed that way."
Hours before the murder, law enforcement was called to North Baldwin Infirmary. April was being discharged and Jim was there even though a protection from abuse order barred him from having any contact with his wife. Allison's sister, Barbara Hastings says there was a history of abuse. "He has whipped up on April. He had tore up cabinets in his house in prior times of anger, shot up walls, shot up TV's in the home with children in the home. The man had a problem."
Kathy Allison reportedly read a copy of the protection order to deputies at the hospital but Sheriff Hoss Mack says just because you have a copy of an order doesn't mean it's valid. "The mere fact that some one has a piece of paper doesn't mean it's valid. Papers have to be certified they have to be recorded there has to be a check and balance system that's one of the thing we're looking at," says Mack.
An internal investigation is underway to make sure everyting was done by the book in the Sheriff's Office. Bay Minette police are also conducting an investigation. Two of their officers responded to the hosptial as back-up for the deputy.
"Jim Dorriety has admitted his guilt that will be the end of that but these three officers that did not do their job it's not the end of that," promises Hastings.
A family's grief has now turned to anger over a crime they say could have been prevented.

I read on another thread somewhere, that at the hospital the wife asked the police NOT to arrest her husband. Would it not therefore be her responsibility also? If the “victim” refuses to press charges, I don’t think there is a lot the police CAN do, unless they see actual signs of abuse. This is why domestic violence issues are so sad-these women want help, but often refuse it when it is right there in front of them, or constantly go back to the environment, until someone ends up severely injured, or dead. Have you seen the billboard-“He only sent her flowers once”-and they are on her casket….

Missippi, Barbour as governor has shown the attitude of officials towards domestic violence as well as how he cares about the financial well being of its citizens. Our law enforcement takes their cues directly from those in charge. When we elect officials who discount violence, violence is normalized. He sent out a Clear message. The family has protested. The sheriff of Jackson county made public statements. You don’t think that is protest when his voice against the gov’ner is basical career suicide? Ask that precious governor why he funneled Katrina relief monies to pet projects then come back and tell us how he must have a reason. With every decision he makes, he illustrates how he feels and thinks. A killer walking free is a slap in the face to the children who lost their mother. We have ZERO TOLERANCE regarding weapons in schools, we need zero tolerance when it comes to violence. Mississippi is not the only state with blood on their hands.

Mississippi, the wifes dad died 2 years ago. Her children were raised by family. That was perfect timing for HB.  The release was carried out, heck yea no one had a say so.  That is a bunch of ####.  I bet you he won’t get re-elected.  There are bank robbers that get more than 19 years.  If HB thinks he is that trust-worthy why isn’t he living in the governors mansion.  HB is governor of a state that is tops in welfares, food stamps, public housing.  Basically MDG got in good with him, a playa and co-erced his way out of murder. As far as one mistake in Mississippi, my second cousin was raped, murdered on old mobile highway in pascagoula in 1963.  She was 14, the homey was released 12 years later.  Do the math, it don’t add up.  Scott Peterson is still sitting in San Quinten Prison on circumstantial evidence.  Nothing was concrete in that case.

i did not said they all are good but we do have some good ones out there.I’m far from one of the good old officers.i’m not and law inforcement at no means.

Yes the people of MS elected Haley Barbour as their govenor and yes he has been a good govenor for the most part.  However in case you have not noticed people are stretched thin financially due to the high gas prices, high grocery prices, increaing energy bills, etc etc etc.  Just because you have not seen ads taken out in poitical forums or newspapers or television ads does not mean that people agreed with the decision.  Let me guess southfan1981 you have NEVER MADE A BAD OR CONTROVERSIAL DECISION IN YOUR LIFE???  Gov. Barbour had his reasons I am sure and maybe just maybe he had a little more insight on this situation than you or I.  Irregardless, I disagree with his decision to release the wife murderer but I am not going to spend hundreds or thousands of dollars to protest his decision.  What about the wife’s family, have they lauched a PROTEST OR POLITICAL ADS CALLING FOR BARBOURS RESIGNATION???  If so I haven’t seen or heard of them.  We have to pick our battles.

You must be one of those so called “Good Officers” Debra. All I know if from personal experience with them not doing their jobs, not just on domestic violence but on other isues. My sons bike got stolen out of my house, I reported it, then I found out who did it, I continuously called them to tell them who it was, they did nothing. My house got broken into again and money was taken, they did nothing, someone stole my cd’s(about 100 of them), I told them who and where they lived, again they did nothing. The point being THEY DO NOTHING!! Hey did anybody hear anything more about the cop that just plowed over that old man with his car that was riding his bike to work like he did everyday for 30yrs? I doubt it.

There is always two sides to a story.Baldwin couny
has some good officers.

The state of Mississippi elected their governor. They trust his judgement. Obviously enough people continue to support his decisions, the release was carried out. I didn’t see protests, I didn’t see ads taken out by Political Action Committees, I havent heard anyone calling for his resignation. So, it appears that voters and citizens have normalized violence. But then again, so have law enforcement in Bay Minette.

Below the belt hit on that comment.  Though I do not agree with Gov. Barbour pardoning or whatever it was he did to the wife murderer a few weeks back, Mississippi does punish people for domestic violence and murder.  Do not characterize the whole states judicial system by one act of our Govenor, not everyone agrees with what he did, as a matter of fact I am not sure you could find 10 people in the state that agree with what Gov Barbour did with the wife murderer.  Of course what I do not understand is how a MURDERER was even allowed to be a TRUSTEE.  In my mind to be a TRUSTEE means that the Sheriff must have some sense of TRUST in the person that they will do the right thing in the future and that whatever landed them in jail was simply a one time lapse in judgement.  But then again that is just my opinion.
