SALT LAKE CITY, Utah - (AP) - A poised and composed Elizabeth Smart hasdescribed her alleged kidnapper as an "evil, wicked,
manipulative" man who is "not spiritual" and "not close to
God."
Smart, who is now 21, testified for two hours today in a federal
courtroom in Salt Lake City, at a competency hearing for Brian
Mitchell.
Twice in state court, Mitchell has been found incompetent for
trial.
He and his estranged wife were found with Smart nine months
after she disappeared from her bedroom in 2002, when she was 14.
Smart testified today that Mitchell raped her repeatedly each
day after the abduction, and that she was told she would be killed
if she yelled or tried to escape.
She said Mitchell was motivated by sex and used religion to get
what he wanted.
Mitchell was removed from the courtroom today before Smart
arrived. He was taken to a holding cell where he could listen to
the proceedings.
A judge ruled earlier this week that testimony from Smart is
relevant to the mental competency of Mitchell.
