James "Bo" Beech, Junior said he confronted his wife Martha after Chatom police arrested her in an undercover sting.
She's charged with conspiracy to commit murder.
Bo Beech said, "When they (police) came out and told me she was planning on murdering me, it was a shock."
Chatom Police said Martha Beech planned on killing her husband with a drug for horses while he was in Mobile Infirmary for surgery.
Police Chief M.D. Garrick said, "She was supposed to have gotten some drugs, obtained some drugs and was supposed to inject these drugs into an I-V after her husband was having surgery in Mobile."
Bo Beech said, "I just asked her why, you know, why? And she, at first started mumbling something and then I said 'Here in front of God and everybody, just tell me why? Be honest? ' And she just looked at me and started crying, saying she was crazy."
Beech's father, James Beech, Senior, said Martha Beech arranged to buy the horse drug from a friend of the family and have her deliver it to where she worked, an Exxon convenience store in Chatom.
James Beech, Senior said, "She (the family friend) worked with the police. She went in, and she was wearing a wire and recorded the whole thing, so the police have a video and audio of the whole taking place, her buying the drugs."
Rebecca Freeman said she worked with Martha Beech at the store and was there when police arrested Beech.
Freeman said, "I didn't even know the package was left until the law came up here and said (to Beech) 'I need that package and I need you to come with me.' "
James Beech, Senior said the family friend "felt badly about causing the trouble and I told her, 'Girl, you don't have nothing to apologize for. You saved his life.' "
Bo and Martha Beech have six children.
But Bo's father said he also recently learned something disturbing.
He said, "She (Martha Beech) had told the other children periodically that Bo was not going to come out of surgery, he was going to die in surgery, that was what she thought."
Martha Beech was being held in Washington County Jail on $30,000 bond.
