Cop Fired For Demanding Free Coffee

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (AP) - An internal affairs report says a
Daytona Beach police officer demanded free coffee and tea from a
Starbucks and threatened employees with slower emergency response
times if they refused.

Lt. Major Garvin, a 15-year veteran, was fired July 8. Chief
Mike Chitwood says Garvin recently failed a polygraph test that he
insisted on taking. The day before he was fired, Garvin wrote a
letter to the chief, saying nothing in his past came close to the
accusations made by the Starbucks workers.

The coffeehouse's employees claim that since June 2007, Garvin
had visited the store as many as six times a night while on duty.
Beside demanding free drinks, workers complained that Garvin also
cut in front of paying customers.

A telephone listing for Garvin could not be found.

This probably happens quite frequently and no one reports it. What happened to the good old days when they just went to the doughnut shop. I wonder if there is a connection there, four Starbucks going out of business in Mobile, hmmm.

A friend of mine was managing a store in downtown mobile when a cop that had pulled her over earlier came in a wanted free coffee because he only gave her a warning instead of a ticket. He left a changed man!

Probably! Who knows what all was happening around town while he was sucking down all that coffee and intimidating the poor clerks that were trying to make a living on the night shift at a lousy coffee house.

for a lt. to be demoted to corporal would be worse than termination. but maybe i was wrong in the free security that is to light. he should have to work for the employees for a month.
he can appeal the termination, but i do not believe he can appeal the demotion. if he gets mad and quits he can not draw unemployment.

Sounds like a good enough reason to me to validate a termination. Other than being an A##, ethics violations come to mind…IMO, he should be criminally charged with extortion.
