(INTRO) THERE'S AN AFTER SCHOOL PROGRAM THAT HAS THE STUDENTS LEARNING TO DO 360 BUNNY HOPS, BELLY RIDING, AND NEGOTIATING A SLALOM COURSE...SOMETIMES WHILE RIDING A GIRAFFE! IF THAT SOUNDS HARD, IT IS...AS METEOROLOGIST JERE HOUGH FOUND OUT JUST DOWN COUNTY ROAD 5.

This is a meeting of the Fairhope Middle School Unicycle Club...doing what they usually do at their meetings: improving their unicycle skills.

Their advisor,is Cyndie Wilkins.  "Let's make a circle," She tells the students in the club she began the last October 2006.

Wilkins explains why she organized the group. "I started riding a unicycle when I was ten years old. My dad challenged me to learn to ride. And when I started teaching I decided this would be a really good way for children to set goals and reach them."

After only a few months, these students seem really at home on the cycles. They play basketball, ride around a cone course, and pass under arches, including the young lady riding the aptly named "Giraffe."

STUDENT #1: "It's kind of hard...it's challenging."

STUDENT #2: "It's not real hard...just sort of."

STUDENT #3: "It's really hard...it's very hard."

And scary- riding high above the others-

STUDENT #4: "It can be when you first get on it, but after that, not really."

The club has already appeared at school assemblies, Christmas and Mardi Gras Parades...and may get some new members. Wilkins says, "We're going to offer unicycling in our PE Department next fall."

Is this your next workout- Wilkins claims it is great exercise. "It requires almost every muscle in your body to stay on these...You never coast...when you're peddling you moving."

But, don't push yourself too much.

STUDENT #5: "...And if you get tired...you fall!"

Meteorologist Jere Hough sits very unsteadily on a unicycle. "Well the kids make riding a unicyle look really easy. And I can tell you, I wouldn't let go of this wall for a hundred dollars. On County Road 5 at Fairhope Middle School I'm Jere Hough, News 5."

(TAG) WILKINS SAYS THAT STUDIES SHOW IT TAKES BETWEEN 5 AND 14 HOURS TO LEARN TO RIDE A UNICYCLE.
