They may be the most unique mystic society...starting with the name: Krewe of Goats. Members are both men and women, and the Krewe is relatively new.
Cecelia Roberts, President, explains, "In 1996 they had the first Goat Man Parade and they named it the Krewe of Goats."
And they're very small, only eight members.
And they're independent...not a part of any Mardi Gras Association.
And their "royalty," called the the Goat Man, is selected from outside the members of the Krewe! But the Goat Man is always someone who contributes to the community. "Like the original Goat Man," says Roberts. "In 1920, the early 20s, there was a gentleman who made little trinkets, and during Mardi Gras times he'd have a little cart and go around the neighborhoods throwing the trinkets that he had made."
He brought Mardi Gras to the Black Community...all the way to W. S. Brady's street..
W. S. Brady remembers when Mardi Gras came and the Goat Man came around. "The children were excited because there was no other entertainment during that time, unless the parents took them downtown to the White parade."
The original Goat Man gave unselfishly to his community, and that's how the modern Goat Man is chosen.
For 2008, it's Mr. William Dotch. He is clearly pleased with the designation. "I thank God for it...it's an honor for someone to look at you and think you're worthy of something of this magnitude."
Dotch was honored at their ball, and then... riding on a special Goat Cart in the big 75-unit parade! Incidentally, the Goat Cart is a converted bus.
Meteorologist Jere Hough stands with three members of the Krewe. "I want you to meet Cecelia, Kenneth, and Ida. These three are almost half the full membership of the Krewe of Goats. Small organization, big party."
