Thousands of people drive between Mobile and Baldwin Counties every day, and for most of them, the Delta is...the view to the north...some water ways, some marshes, some trees...and nearly always, a boat or two. But of course, there's much more.
For one thing, the Mobile-Tensaw Delta is huge.
Hank Burch, Manager of the Center, comments on the importance of the Delta. "More than two thirds of the State of Alabama, and portions of Mississippi, Tennessee and Georgia flow down through Alabama and drain into Mobile Bay through this Delta."
The Delta itself covers an area roughly the size of Mobile Bay!
Beyond what you can see from the highways are wetlands that are home to an amazing variety of plants and animals. And now there is a focal point...the Five Rivers Delta Resource Center.
Burch explains, "Our gateway to outdoor recreation, conservation education, and land stewardship in the Mobile-Tensaw River Delta."
There are three big buildings...connected by a series of walkways and decks. They back up to Sardine Pass and a large dock for visitors who come by boat. The view is very nice.
Burch gestures to the west, "We oriented over in this direction to be able to catch the sunset over the Mobile Bay skyline, and it is stunning, as you might expect."
Inside the buildings are facilities for education--a ninety-seat theatre for one; an exhibition hall; a gift shop that features work by local artists who use local woods and clays. The reception hall has a big fireplace, and like all the interiors, beautifully finished in local woods. In fact, a lobby table is built entirely of "Sinkers." Old logs recovered from the bottom of Delta waters!
There's a visitors' center near the entrance; and a small building to be leased to a canoe/kayak vendor.
The grounds have walkways, covered picnic areas, and benches scattered throughout the property.
Jere Hough stands on the big dock. "You know the Mobile-Tensaw Delta was proposed as a National Park. What do you suppose those people saw that was so wonderful- Well now, you get to find out for yourself!" On County Road 5, at the Five Rivers Delta Resource Center, I'm Jere Hough, News 5."
