He says, "I probably have thirty-forty feeders of any kind out in the yard at any time, and so I get a lot of migrating birds stop over to feed."
He has traveled some, notably to photograph eagles near Apalachicola, Florida, but most of pictures are taken locally.
He's very serious about his hobby. He has five cameras, three computers, and two printers devoted to it. "I print everything myself, I matte it, I frame it."
He even sells some of them...up to $250 for large framed prints. "Anytime I sell a photograph," he says, "I take the money and donate to Pensacola's Wildlife Sanctuary."
The Sanctuary provides care for injured wildlife and, when possible, returns them to the wild. Neitzel has some close up pictures of eagles which he took of injured birds at the Sanctuary.
He drives through Gulf State Park on his way to work, and spotted a pair of osprey building a nest. He stopped many days to take a picture or two, using a special "tripod" which fits over the driver's side window of his car. One of those photographs was selected to be a part of a 2008 National Calendar. The Calendar features wildlife from twelve State Parks from around the Nation.
One of his favorite photos is a hummingbird stopped in mid-air at a flower. He says he it took "...six hours and over 500 photographs to get one that I could keep!"
Patience and perseverance are what it takes to photograph wildlife, he says.
The calendar is published by Watchable Wildlife. You can order the calendar directly from them on line. Their web address is on this page.
