The Poarch Creek Indians are a major presence here...their Tribal Lands adjacent to Atmore. Locals flock to their Thanksgiving Pow-wows. And the Bingo Parlor and Game Room attract many visitors. But there's change coming.
Buford Rolin is the Tribal Chief. Standing in front of the well known Bingo Parlor, he explains what is going to happen soon. "We're planning a new development of our new hotel which will include a major expansion in our casino area...sixteen story hotel, and a resort area."
When asked about the reaction from the Atmore community, he says, "Well, the biggest feedback is, 'When is it going to happen? When are you going to have the groundbreaking?' They are as excited as we are."
And actually, the City of Atmore has its own expansion plans, as Mayor Howard Shell explains. He shows a map of the I-65 interchange #57. It puts you onto Highway 21 which takes you to Atmore, five miles away.
The City has purchased all the land around the interchange, plus taken into the City the land leased by Jeff Davis Community College.
"We have brought about 750 acres around the interchange into the City Limits," says Shell proudly.
The project is called RiverCane. It even has a six acre lake to enhance the attractiveness to businesses.
Good economic news...but all that is five miles from the actual community of Atmore, which is probably also good news. The citizens love their city:
"Family...focus. The environment is so conducive to raising children."
"Everybody just gets along around here...we help each other out."
"Whenever you come to Atmore, you're welcome."
"It's home...it's a good home town."
