TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) - Florida's unemployment rate is thehighest it's been in more than 13 years, another sign of the
state's struggling economy.
The Agency for Workforce Innovation reported today that 572,000
Floridians were unemployed in July as the jobless rate rose almost
one percent to just over six percent. The rate is the highest since
January 1995. A year ago, the state's unemployment rate was about
four percent.
The last time Florida's jobless rate hit six percent was in
January 2002 in the aftermath of the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist
attacks in New York City and Washington, D.C.
The July figures continue the trend of negative over-the-year
growth that began in September, primarily due to declines in
construction.
Just yesterday, Gov. Charlie Crist announced a plan to help to
jump start Florida's sagging economy by speeding up government
construction projects.
