Alabama Power officials say, on any given workday, there are more than 700 contractors across the state keeping limbs and obstacles clear of several thousand miles of electric lines.“The Federal Energy Regulatory Commission has the power to assess fines and penalties to any non compliance to those vegetation standards,” says Manager of Power Delivery Contract Services Randall Gann. He says the state has 70,000 miles of distribution lines and 10,000 miles of transmission lines.
“To cover that much territory in a reasonable amount of time we have to address from 16 to 17 thousand miles a year for both distribution and transmission,” says Gann. Vegetation clearing is the second biggest item in Alabama Power's budget.
