WASHINGTON (AP) - The Consumer Product Safety Commission saysit's adding staff at the nation's busiest ports following a year
awash in toy recalls.
The commission is promising to work more closely with U.S.
Customs to stop suspect imports and keep potentially dangerous toys
off the market. And there are plans to increase port inspection of
toys, fireworks, electronics and other potentially high-risk toys.
Congress is doling out 20 million dollars extra for the agency's
budget. But legislation that would bulk up its regulatory powers
has stalled.
Acting commission chief Nancy Nord is vigorously defending the
agency's safety record, but says she is ready to embrace major
change.
Nord says the unprecedented year of toy recalls had more to do
with "more effective enforcement" rather than a deluge of unsafe
toys.
