Bayou La Batre city workers will soon be saying "Thank Goodness It's Thursday!"Starting next week, the city will add its name to the growing list of municipalities working ten hours a day, four days a week.
Corey Coleman, who has worked in the public works department for eight years, says he thinks it's a great idea. "I love it," said Coleman. "I'll gladly go to it."
Mayor Stan Wright says the switch will apply to almost all city employees including those at city hall, the street department, the library, municipal court, and city clerk's office. According the mayor, the only exceptions will be the fire and police departments.
The switch takes effect July 21st. City employees, who typically work 8 to 5, will report to work at 7am. City offices will be open to the public for one extra hour from 8 to 6.
Wright insists a $14,000 power bill last month was the final straw pushing him to make the switch. He hopes turning off lights and air condition for an extra day a week will add up to significant savings in the coming months.
