ECLECTIC, Ala. (AP) - More than 20 Elmore County high school
students are riding their bikes to school in protest of rising gas
prices.
Fed up with high gas prices, 17-year-old Tracy Daar parked his
Honda Accord and started using his bike for the 12 miles round trip
from his home in Central to Elmore County High School in Eclectic.
More than 20 other schoolmates joined him a week later in the
protest, which he named the "Boycott Gas Bike Ride Movement."
Since the boycott began, history teacher Renee Glenn is hearing
students talk more about economics, disposable income and how
nonviolent protest can affect change.
Principal Jim Adams is proud of his students for highlighting
not only high fuel prices but also teenage obesity and plans to
join them by riding his bike to school.

Me and the wife have been getting better acquainted with our bikes for the past six months. We do our community patrol on them and other things, but most cities aren’t bike friendly. Here in Saraland you have to take your chances with the cars to cross 43 or go north or south on 43. If we had side walks like fair hope and Daphne a lot of people wouldn’t need to start their autos very often. It will take a commitment to change to make a real difference in oil use and pollution reduction.

Maybe we’ll see alot more of the Critical Mass movement.

“Critical Mass is an event typically held on the last Friday of every month in cities around the world where bicyclists and other self-propelled commuters take to the streets en masse.”

Is this a protest or just a good thing to do all around?

maybe in the future we will start seeing more bike lanes encouraging this as the everyday norm.
