WASHINGTON (AP) - The American Council of the Blind has wonanother round in its six-year legal fight with the Treasury Department to change U.S. paper currency.
A federal appeals court in Washington, D.C., has ruled that the
government discriminates against blind people by printing paper
money that is impossible for them to distinguish various
denominations.
The Council for the Blind's president says the suit is based on
the simple premise that the blind should not "have to rely on
people to tell us what our money is."
The ruling could force the Treasury Department to redesign its
money. Suggested changes have ranged from making bills different
sizes to printing them with raised markings.
