UNDATED (AP) - The announcement by German automaker Volkswagenthat it will build a new U.S. plant in Chattanooga adds to the
South's luster as a car manufacturing region.
VW said Tuesday it will begin building cars in 2011 at a new
plant where 2,000 employees will manufacture 150,000 vehicles per
year.
Other overseas carmakers have also found the region attractive.
Nissan just moved into its new North American headquarters in
Franklin. The Japanese carmaker has plants in Smyrna and Decherd
(DECK'-urd) in central Tennessee and in Canton, Miss.
Toyota is building vehicles in Georgetown, Ky., and Blue
Springs, Miss.
Mercedes-Benz has a plant in Vance, Ala.
BMW has a plant in Greer, S.C..
Hyundai located a plant in Montgomery, Ala.
Kia has a plant in West Point, Ga.
Honda put a plant in Lincoln, Ala.
