Terry Sweat has spent the last three decades working in a gas station on Dawes Road. In 2002, she and her husband, Kirk, bought the store from her former boss. They did alot of remodeling, and they even changed the store's name... But, the one thing they didn't change were the gas pumps!

"Younger people will tell you they don't know how to work the pumps," said Kirk. "They've never seen nothing like this before. It amazes them, but it's routine to us."

The old fashion pumps were built back in the 1970s, long before anyone thought gas would get so expensive. Whoever built the machines must not have anticipated anyone spending 100 bucks to fill up their tank.

"When it got to $99, it would swap back to three zeros and people would get confused," said Kirk.

The pumps couldn't calculate a fuel bill over $99.99, so within the last year the state forced them to install a costly new motor to keep up with rising prices. It was a $4,000 fix they never saw coming.

"Lord no," he said. "It used to go up like a penny every two or three years. Now, she'll jump 8 and 10 cents a day now."

Even after the upgrade, the pumps at Terry's Tide still don't have a credit card slider, and they can't automatically shut off when you pre-pay for fuel. But, the owners say that's how they like it... They get to meet each and every one of their customers when they come inside to pay!
